Normally I find myself tending to towards Independant ticket. But, since we really didnt have any independants that stood out this time around, I have been trying to choose between the candidates that the two main parties have offered.
Now, I find myself in a bit of a quandry. The election is coming up and, even after listening intently to everthing that both candidates have to say, I'm not really supporting either.
On the one hand we have the man that many of us have known for most of our lives, Sen. John McCain. He's a good man, it seems. And one thing that you can say about him is that he doesn't shrink from what he thinks is right, no matter what the polls may say.
The problems for me are that, one, I have a child that is, as of next year, going to be in the armed forces.
When McCain tells me that my child could be at war for a year, two years, a thousand years, or however long it takes to get the job done, I think the man has lost his mind.
And what exactly is this job that we are trying so hard to do? Give the Iraqis freedom? Make sure they have their own government? Those are done.
Why are we still there?
One explaination is that we have to make sure that the governement is stable enough that it wont collapse as soon as we leave.
I do understand that, but Im not sure that I, as a parent, am willing to sacrifice my child for someone else. And I'm not one hundred percent sure that the real job over there isnt just keeping control of the Iraqi oil.
The other problem I have with McCain is a simple one. He is running for president during a time when we need someone very strong on the economy.
He readily admits that he is weak and almost completely unknowledgable when it comes to the economy.
That would tend to make me believe that Sen. McCain wouldnt be the best man for the job.
Guess I should support Obama, huh?
Well, the problem there is that I have been paying attention. I have seen, time and time again, Sen. Obama being tied to people who have either terroristic, or just simply unamerican, views.
Yes, I understand that he was young, yes I understand that he said he doesnt support thier veiws.
But here is what's bothering me. If my preacher started to preach things that I thought was morally wrong and dispicable, I would leave. I wouldnt sit in that church and support someone that I thought wasnt teaching the word of God.
If I found out that one of my friends or associates was a terrorist, destroying other peoples lives and property. Well, to say the least they would no longer be my friend or associate.
Sen. Obama doesnt do that. He says that he doesnt support these people, but then he stays with them and keeps them close to him.
I may be a simple man, but to me, that seems to be contradictory.
So here I sit, wondering who I should vote for. If I should vote for either. If our country, which I love, will survive either choice.
